New art walls throughout the Wailuku Garage celebrate the water, landscapes, native species and stories that connect Wailuku from the mountains to the sea.
Inspired by community input, each floor offers a different view of Wailuku’s natural and cultural landscape. Together, the installations create a visual journey from the life-giving waters of Nā Wai ʻEhā to the cultivated lands, mountains and clouds above.
Next time you stop by the Wailuku Garage, take a moment to enjoy the artwork on each level.
The artwork on the first level begins with the waters that have shaped and sustained Wailuku for generations.
Born in the clouds above Mauna Kahālāwai, water flows down the mountains, through the valleys and toward the ocean. Along the way, it nourishes plants, animals and communities throughout the Wailuku ahupuaʻa.
Hand-painted pieces created by Wailuku community members come together to form a colorful, stylized landscape. Each individual piece contributes to a larger story about water and its essential connection to life.
The second level brings visitors into the cultivated landscape of Wailuku, where flowing water supports fields of kalo and the small native species that depend on these freshwater environments.
The artwork highlights the relationship between the loʻi, the channels that carry water and the people who care for the land. Its imagery reflects the responsibility to protect and sustain the natural resources that make growth possible.
This level celebrates the shared work that allows water, food and community to flourish together.
On the third level, the artwork looks upward to the mountains, where clouds gather and waterfalls begin their descent into the valleys below.
Flowing shapes and layered mountain forms capture the movement of water through the landscape. Native stream fish are shown making their remarkable journey upstream, climbing toward the higher reaches of the mountain waterways.
The scene connects the clouds, cliffs, waterfalls and streams as parts of one living system, reminding visitors that the water flowing through Wailuku begins high within Mauna Kahālāwai.
The journey reaches the sky on the fourth level, where clouds and pueo move across a quieter, more open landscape.
Community conversations helped shape this level’s focus on Wailuku’s connection to stories of the pueo. Shown in flight among soft cloud forms, the native owl brings a sense of watchfulness, calm and peace to the highest floor of the garage.
The artwork completes the journey through Wailuku’s landscape—from water and cultivated lands to mountains, clouds and sky.
